Michael Strauss is the Co-Founder and Founding Director of ONE - USA, a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting inclusion, accessibility, independent living, advocacy, and community engagement for individuals with disabilities. His vision for ONE - USA was shaped not only by decades of professional experience but by more than four decades of lived disability experience. Michael founded ONE - USA on the belief that no person should have to face disability, isolation, or life's challenges alone. Under his leadership, the organization is committed to building stronger communities by creating opportunities for friendship, education, advocacy, volunteerism, and meaningful community involvement. As a disability advocate, technology professional, and nonprofit leader, Michael brings both professional expertise and personal understanding to the organization's mission. His leadership philosophy is centered on collaboration, dignity, and empowering individuals to live as independently and fully as possible.Michael has lived with disabilities his entire life. He was born with Aniridia, a rare genetic eye condition that significantly affected his vision from birth. He is also autistic with Level 1 Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). These experiences have provided him with more than 44 years of firsthand understanding of the barriers individuals with disabilities often encounter, including accessibility challenges, misconceptions, and social isolation. In 2023, Michael's life changed dramatically following an explosion that resulted in the loss of his remaining functional vision. Today, he is completely blind in his left eye and legally blind in his right. Adjusting to profound vision loss required learning entirely new ways of navigating daily life, adopting assistive technologies, and rebuilding independence. While this experience presented extraordinary challenges, it also reinforced his commitment to ensuring that others facing disability have access to the support, resources, friendships, and advocacy they deserve. Michael believes disability is a natural part of the human experience and that every person deserves dignity, opportunity, accessibility, and the ability to participate fully within their community.
